Waterloo – Taking care of young children – whether yours or someone else’s – is an important responsibility. A Red Cross Babysitter’s Training Course can help you learn what you need to know to be the best and most responsible babysitter you can be.

Your local American Red Cross Hawkeye Chapter Babysitter’s Training is open to boys and girls 10 to 15 years old. All courses are taught by an authorized Red Cross Babysitter’s Training instructor. The next trainings are Saturday, February 20 and Friday, March 19 from 9 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. at the Hawkeye Chapter, 2530 University Avenue, Waterloo. The cost is $40.

The babysitter’s training program is fun and fast-paced with hands-on activities, exciting video and role-plays and lively discussions.  Certified babysitters learn to perform basic child-care skills such as diapering and feeding, how to handle bedtime and discipline issues, plus care for common injuries and emergencies such as choking, burns, cuts and bee stings.

“Our babysitter’s training program teaches area youth how to be safe and responsible while babysitting.  We focus on different situations that may arise while on the job such as what to do if there is a tornado warning or what to do in case of an emergency if there is no phone available to call 911. It’s our hope that young babysitters never have to face these situations, but we want them to be prepared if something does happen,” said Chris Roberts, Hawkeye Chapter health and safety director.

Each year, the Red Cross trains and certifies more than 121,000 sitters nationwide through the Babysitter’s Training program. Certified babysitters learn leadership skills, basic care, accident prevention techniques, and first aid procedures that can save a child’s life.

To register call the Hawkeye Chapter to register at (319) 234-6831 or visit www.hawkeyechapter.org. Pre-registration is required. Reserve your spot today as class size is limited. Please bring a sack lunch. At the course, youth will receive a babysitter's training handbook, emergency reference guide and CD-Rom.
